The Friendship Force and PeaceTrees Vietnam are teaming up to build The Friendship
Peace Library in Axing Commune, Huong Hua District, Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.
The area, approximately the size of King County, WA, 2000 sq miles is mostly
agricultural. It was the most severely bombed battleground in the history of the world. When the war was over, these unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmines, which can
be active for up to fifty years, remained. Quang Tri Province is home to indigenous people who cannot read or
write Vietnamese and so cannot understand warnings about UXO and landmines and because of this, Quang
Tri Province has one of the highest rates of injury and death from UXO and landmines in all of Vietnam. The
Friendship Peace Library will serve as a community center and learning center to teach landmine awareness and
teach the children to read and write Vietnamese.
