Thailand

Explore Thailand!

Lawrence Nahlik has been asked by Friendship Force International to lead a trip to Thailand in January 2009. Lawrence was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand in the late 70s. He speaks Thai and has been visiting for over 30 years.

The trip's focus is environmental. It's open to anyone, though there will be a screening process for health and cultural sensitivity. You'll be on the ground in Thailand for approximately 16 days. Highlights will include:

  • • Study the methods of Wildlife Conservation Society scientists at their tiger conservation project during a two-day visit to Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary.
    • First-class sleeper train overnight to Chiang Mai, Thailand's 2nd city, and capital of the North.
    • Celebrate Chinese New Year in Chiang Mai.
    • See how the Akha hill tribe lives during a two-day visit to their village.
    • Day trip to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center.
    • Visit the area hardest hit by the tsunami in December 2004, and learn about the long recovery from that devastating event.
    • Snorkel the pristine coral reefs of the Similan Islands National Park in the Andaman Sea.
